Lifeworks and Keele University Conference

As part of our lottery funding Lifeworks organised an Autism Spectrum Conference at Keele University which took place on the 5th October 2017. The purpose of this was to raise awareness and to help professionals, students and anyone else interested in autistic spectrum conditions to understand and engage with people on the spectrum more effectively. Lifeworks endeavoured to highlight the challenges individuals on the spectrum face on a daily basis.

Presentations were given by our four speakers:

  • Dr Donna Berry (School of Psychology, Keele University).
  • Dr Pamela Wood (Snr Clinical Psychologist, Autism Spectrum Assessment Service).
  • Dr Luke Beardon (Autism Centre, Sheffield Hallam University).
  • Louise Zandian (Lifeworks CEO).

To end the conference the speakers formed a panel to enable a question and answer session. Donna’s presentation focused on Autism and Policing, Pamela spoke about the Adult Autism Assessment Service, Luke gave his thoughts on how unhappy autistic children can be supported to become happy autistic adults. Louise’s presentation was aimed on the development of communication support and mentoring for people with an average or above IQ on the Autistic Spectrum.

Celebrate The Difference Training

Lifeworks Staffordshire offered bespoke training to Health and Social Care Staff, outlining all aspects of Autism ADHD and co-occurring conditions. This was delivered by Louise Zandian our CEO and conveyed what it is like for people on the autistic spectrum when they try to obtain help from Health and Social Care services.

It conveyed an understanding of the condition and how services can be made better accessible to this group of people.

Louise showed in the training what experiences clients have had and how things could be made better for them when accessing GP’s and Health and Social Care. This training was for the North Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent areas. 67 Health + Social Care and GP staff attended the training.

Healthwatch Project

The project was to support people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions and secondary mental ill health, who identified as suffering due to the impact of COVID. This was done through one to one meetings via zoom and face to face, to receive specialist Life-coaching in the form of practical strategies, and to help clients understand themselves better.

18 individuals received Life-coaching as part of this project, with 75 hours of sessions between February and March 2022.

They received support in a variety of areas including, daily tasks, past trauma, addiction, employment, anger management, anxiety, benefits, caring responsibilities, relationships, and physical disability.

All these sessions were funded by Healthwatch and normally cost £30 per hour.

All clients were asked if they felt that the support they had had had made a difference, they all felt it had made them feel less isolated, and that they had someone they could turn to if needed.
